Check out the first “Walking Tour Video” from Formosa Files, an idea we will be improving on in the future. As many know, the port town of Tamsui (淡水) has a long, rich history. Strategically located near the mouth of the Tamsui (Danshui) River, the Spanish built a fort here in the 1600s, as did the Dutch, and numerous European traders came here in the nineteenth century when it was a treaty port. But perhaps the most surprising foreign presence was the brief and bloody stay of the French military. This was the Battle of Tamsui in October 1884, which was a part of the Sino-French War. In this video based on an extract of podcast episode part two, John Groot, the author of “Taiwanese Feet: My walk around Taiwan,” takes Formosa Flies’ John Ross on a “walking tour” of his beloved hometown on the trail of the mostly-forgotten 1884 Battle of Tamsui between French and Taiwanese forces, a battle which was a rare victory for the beleaguered Qing dynasty.
